Plugins extend and expand the functionality of WordPress. You may automatically install plugins from the [WordPress Plugins Directory](https://wordpress.org/plugins/?output_format=md) or upload a plugin in .zip format via this screen. [[ The top section of the screen has 4 links (Featured, Popular, Recommended and Favorites) and Search Plugins box. The Featured page is active by default when you click into the Plugins – Add New menu. ## 󠀁[Search Plugins](https://wordpress.org/documentation/article/plugins-add-new-screen/?output_format=md#search-plugins)󠁿 If you know what you’re looking for, Search Plugins is your best bet. The Search function has options to search the [WordPress Plugins Directory](https://wordpress.org/plugins/) for a particular Keyword, Author, or Tag. Enter the word, or words, that can be used to search for the Plugin you would like to find. An example of a search keyword is **backup**. Hit the Enter key to initiate the Search. You will be presented with a table of Plugins under the Search Results link. You can also search the directory by selecting popular tags at the bottom of Featured page. Tags in larger type mean more plugins have been labeled with that tag. ### 󠀁[Search Results](https://wordpress.org/documentation/article/plugins-add-new-screen/?output_format=md#search-results)󠁿 Completing a search causes a new link to appear on the page called “Search Results” with Search type box allows for Keyword, Author, or Tag choices. * **Search type** – Pull down the box to select one of three searches types. ** Keyword** searches plugins names and descriptions for the specified keyword, ** Author** searches for plugins created by the Author, or which the Author contributed to, and **Tag** searches for plugins tagged as such. Once that is selected, re-enter the word, or words, if required in the search box and hit the Enter key. The Search Results page consists of a table with the Plugin Name, Descriptions, Author, star rating from users, Last Updated, compatibility with your WordPress version, action button and link to More Details information. There are 3 types of actions: * **Install Now** – When clicked, install the plugin immediately. * **Update Now** – When the plugin is already installed but not the latest version, it is labeled as Update Now. * **Installed** – When the latest plugin is already installed, it is labeled as Installed, and deactivated. If there are many Plugins found with your search, there will be Page Numbers at the top of the Table that will allow you to navigate to those pages. If you don’t see the Plugin you wish to install, execute a new Search via the boxes at the top of the Table. #### 󠀁[Install Now](https://wordpress.org/documentation/article/plugins-add-new-screen/?output_format=md#install-now)󠁿 If the Install Now is clicked for a Plugin in one of the search Tables, it will install the plugin and display messages similar to the following: * _Installing Plugin: WP-DB-Backup xxx_ * _Downloading plugin package from XXXXX_ * _Unpacking the plugin package_ * _Installing the plugin_ * _Successfully installed the plugin WP-DB-Backup xxx._ * _Activate Plugin | Return to Plugin Installer_ As part of a successful Plugin installation, two links are displayed: * **Activate Plugin** – Click this link to activate the Plugin just installed. * **Return to Plugin Installer** – Click this to be directed to the **Plugins Add New Screen**. If you get prompted for ftp login information you can bypass this by setting the file permissions properly. See [Updating WordPress](https://wordpress.org/support/article/updating-wordpress/?output_format=md) for more details. ## 󠀁[Upload Plugins](https://wordpress.org/documentation/article/plugins-add-new-screen/?output_format=md#upload-plugins)󠁿 If you want to install a plugin that you’ve downloaded elsewhere, click the Upload link in the upper left. You will be prompted to upload the .zip package, and once uploaded, you can install the plugin. * **Browse** – Click to browse your computer’s local hard drive and the select the Plugin zip file name is placed in the text box. * **Install Now** – Click this button to install the Plugin from the zip file detailed in the text box. ## 󠀁[Featured and Popular Plugins](https://wordpress.org/documentation/article/plugins-add-new-screen/?output_format=md#featured-and-popular-plugins)󠁿 If you just want to get an idea of what’s available, you can browse Featured and Popular plugins by using the links in the upper left of the screen. They produce similar tables to conducting a search. These sections rotate regularly. ## 󠀁[Recommended Plugin](https://wordpress.org/documentation/article/plugins-add-new-screen/?output_format=md#recommended-plugin)󠁿 In a Recommend page, suggested plugins based on the plugins you and other users have installed are listed. ## 󠀁[Favorites Plugin](https://wordpress.org/documentation/article/plugins-add-new-screen/?output_format=md#favorites-plugin)󠁿 WordPress has the ability to display and easily install a user’s favorite plugins from this **Plugins Add New Screen**.
