You can also use a shortcut slash command to quickly add blocks or use the More options on any of the block&#8217;s toolbar to add a block. You can also <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/article\/moving-blocks\/\">move blocks<\/a> or search for a block in your post or page. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-is-the-inserter\">How to add blocks using the Block Inserter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are three ways to add a block using the <strong>+<\/strong> icon (also called the&nbsp;<strong>Block Inserter<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Block inserter icon in the top toolbar<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Block inserter icon to the right of an empty block<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Block inserter icon in between blocks <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"515\" src=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/files\/2019\/06\/inserting-block-options-1024x515.png\" alt=\"Three ways to add a block using the block inserter icon\" class=\"wp-image-16356174\" style=\"width:397px;height:200px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/files\/2019\/06\/inserting-block-options-1024x515.png 1024w, https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/files\/2019\/06\/inserting-block-options-300x151.png 300w, https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/files\/2019\/06\/inserting-block-options-768x386.png 768w, https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/files\/2019\/06\/inserting-block-options-1536x773.png 1536w, https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/files\/2019\/06\/inserting-block-options.png 1968w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Using the Block inserter icon in the top toolbar<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Click on the Block Inserter <strong>+<\/strong> icon in the top toolbar in the <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/article\/wordpress-editor\/\" data-type=\"helphub_article\" data-id=\"11284616\">WordPress block editor<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can find a list of all the <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/article\/blocks\/\" data-type=\"helphub_article\" data-id=\"11284652\">blocks<\/a> available in the <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/article\/wordpress-editor\/\" data-type=\"helphub_article\" data-id=\"11284616\">WordPress block editor<\/a>.  The most frequently used blocks are listed at the top (based on your <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/article\/preferences-overview\/#blocks\">Preference<\/a> settings). Hovering over each block will show you a brief description and preview of the block.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can scroll down the list to find blocks in categories, like Text, Media, Design, Widgets, Layout, Theme, or Embeds, You also find third-party blocks from installed plugins. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you find the block, drag and drop it into the block editor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1364\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 2836 \/ 1364;\" width=\"2836\" controls src=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/files\/2019\/06\/add-block.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Adding Block Patterns using the top-toolbar inserter<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/article\/block-pattern\/\">Block Patterns<\/a> are a collection of predefined blocks that you can insert into pages and posts and then customize with your own content. Using a Block Pattern is an easy way to create beautiful layouts that combine different blocks to produce professional designs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can open the Patterns tab to view collections of patterns within a specific category like&nbsp;<strong>Featured<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Call to Action<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Pages<\/strong>, and so on, or click the&nbsp;<strong>Explore<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>all patterns<\/strong>&nbsp;button at the bottom of that section to open the patterns in a new, larger, window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Click on any pattern once and it will be added to your page at the location of your cursor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1364\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 2836 \/ 1364;\" width=\"2836\" controls src=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/files\/2019\/06\/adding-patterns.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Adding Media using the top-toolbar inserter<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The media tab allows you to view and add to the page images you have used, additionally, you can also view free media content from <a href=\"https:\/\/openverse.org\/\">Openverse<\/a>. A synced pattern will behave in exactly the same way as a reusable block.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"inserter-right-of-an-empty-block\">Using the Block Inserter icon to the right of an empty block<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Click on the Block Inserter <strong>+<\/strong> icon to the right of an empty block. If the <strong>+<\/strong> icon isn&#8217;t displayed first click on the placeholder text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clicking the Block Inserter <strong>+<\/strong> icon will open a modal window with a list of the most frequently used <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/article\/blocks\/\">blocks<\/a> you can also search for a block you would like to use. You can click on this icon to open a modal window with a list of the most frequently used <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/article\/blocks\/\">blocks<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1816\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 3364 \/ 1816;\" width=\"3364\" controls src=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/files\/2022\/07\/Screen-Recording-2022-07-20-at-2.06.16-PM.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"slash-command\">How to add blocks using the slash command <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can quickly add a block to your post or page using the slash command. This shortcut will help with your writing flow with fewer interruptions searching for a block.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Begin by adding a new paragraph block by pressing <kbd>Enter<\/kbd> or <kbd>Return<\/kbd> on your keyboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then hit the forward-slash (\u201c<kbd>\/<\/kbd>\u201d) key followed by the block name. You will find the Block Inserter <strong>+<\/strong> icon to the bottom right of the group of blocks. Click the Block Inserter <strong>+<\/strong> icon to quickly add a new block to the nested group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1364\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 2836 \/ 1364;\" width=\"2836\" controls src=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/files\/2019\/06\/adding-nested-blocks.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to add blocks using the block directory<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can also discover and install third-party blocks from within the WordPress block editor using the <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/article\/block-directory\/\" data-type=\"helphub_article\" data-id=\"13176189\">WordPress block directory<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To search the WordPress block directory, use the Block Inserter <strong>+<\/strong> icon on the top toolbar in the WordPress block editor and search for available blocks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WordPress first runs a search on the available blocks that come with WordPress. If it\u2019s unable to find any block that meets the criteria, it starts searching the block directory and gives you a list. Click on any from the list to install the third-party block. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1364\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 2836 \/ 1364;\" width=\"2836\" controls src=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/files\/2019\/06\/adding-custom-block.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"background-color:#e5f5fa\">The block directory search functionality is only available to WordPress users who have permission to install plugins. If you add a third-party block from the block directory, the corresponding WordPress plugin will be installed on your site. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"searching-for-blocks\">How to search for blocks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you click the Block Inserter <strong>+<\/strong> icon to insert a new block, you can use the <strong>search box<\/strong> at the top to search for blocks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Type in a block name or a keyword for example,&nbsp;<code>\"image\"<\/code>&nbsp;or <code>\"heading\"<\/code>. Then a list of blocks that fit the search term will show up in the modal window. You can also see a preview of the block below the list of blocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Select the desired block with the mouse click, tap, or arrow keys. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"481\" height=\"633\" src=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/files\/2019\/06\/search-block-from-the-inserter-20220513.png\" alt=\"Search for a block\" class=\"wp-image-15642621\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/files\/2019\/06\/search-block-from-the-inserter-20220513.png 481w, https:\/\/wordpress.org\/documentation\/files\/2019\/06\/search-block-from-the-inserter-20220513-228x300.png 228w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 481px) 100vw, 481px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Search for a block<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you use the <a href=\"#slash-command\" data-type=\"internal\" data-id=\"#slash-command\">slash command<\/a> to add a block, you get an auto-suggested list of blocks based on what you start typing.
