I get the ‘error establishing a database connection when I try to update or delete plugins and I keep getting spam comments that I can’t delete. I installed FileZilla but when I completed the steps, I received the following message ‘Insecure FTP connection. This server does not support FTP over TLS so I was fearful to contnue.

That tells only that you have a http instead of https. Not so serious.

“error establishing a database connection” seems to come with 5.02 upgrade for some sites. Some thoughts and possible fixes:

Thank you for your response. But where do I find the wp-config.php file

It will be in the same folder as wordpress is install in.

I think this is all out of my league. I don’t know what folder wordpress is installed in. Sorry for being so ignorant.

You need to have access to cPanel or something similar, it is not seen through the WordPress dashboard that I can remember. It’s in the public html folder.

    Howdy!

I have to ask the question here because it was the first thing that popped into my head: why are you installing FileZilla?

What is it you are trying to do?

The “error establishing connection” message could be one of a few things. Sometimes it could be the database process is not running, it could mean there were not enough resources to try and contact the database, or the weirdest one where the database credentials were changed on the wp-config file.

Have you tried reaching out to your hosting company about this yet? This seems like it could potentially be on the server side of things.

Vaultpress suggest FileZilla. I have been on the phone many times with FatCat. They tried several things including requesting I clear all cookies and change my password. Then they disabled all my plugins. Nothing helped.

Here is what they said on the email.

    Hey Susan,

If you need to edit your wp-config.php file then you would need to connect to your site via FTP. You can find a set of instructions for doing that here:

    https://www.fatcow.com/help/article/ftp-how-to-connect-using-an-ftp-client

If you can get those login credentials we can also try to check out the site on our side. Just make sure you enter them here:

    https://dashboard.vaultpress.com/246241/access/

Note – Only enter the credentials in the secure page above. Do not send them via email.

As for ww.wp.xz.cn support, they actually have a support forum you can ask for help on here:

    https://ww.wp.xz.cn/support/forum/how-to-and-troubleshooting/

Let us know if you have any questions, we’ll be happy to help.

    Thanks,
    Anthony Faxlandez
