need clarification on testing templates

“index.php & wp-layout.css: Current known-good layout
index2.php & wp-layout2.css: Layout you’re testing”
after I make copies, do I upload to the same directory the originals are in? and where do I see the results after I upload? won’t my site address take me to my normal home page? (still learning….)
