I just installed the plugin, because we were getting a few spam comments on our multisite network recently, which has comments completely disabled for years. When I activated the plugin and was about to delete existing comments, it said, that there are more than 135.000 comments to delete.

So I disabled the plugin again and started searching for these comments, unsuccessful. On all four sites of the multisite network there’s only a handful, but nothing close to 135.000.

Is this number real? Where would I find them?

  • Hi @mikeemesser

    Greetings!

I understand it can be quite alarming to see a number like 135,000 when your dashboard appears to show only a handful of comments! Rest assured, this is a common occurrence on multisite networks, and the number reported by the plugin is accurate based on your database records.

Most are likely Media Attachment comments. Or could be from RET API, and some times Spambots target the individual pages created for every image you upload. Since the WordPress “Comments” menu usually only shows Posts and Pages, these entries stay hidden in your UI.

You can verify the full count by logging into WordPress database, phpMyAdmin. Look for the wp_comments table.

If you are certain that those are 100% spam, our plugin is the fastest way to purge them using ‘delete everywhere’ option. We recommend a quick database backup before proceeding.

    Thanks

Ah, sorry: If anyone asks you this question in the future, please tell him it is Woocommerce, for whatever reason. They are putting all their transactional stuff in comments.
