Please reset the settings on WP Admin > Testimonials > Settings > Reset tab and then try to load a normal Testimonials Widget and shortcode.
That did not help. I’ve got 2.9.0. I removed the shortcodes from the sidebar, reset the plugin and then dragged the standard testimonials widget into the sidebar. I changed no settings and it came up no testimonials found.

I tried updating to 2.9.1, but that did not make a difference. It still doesn’t find any of the testimonials.
