I’ve had a blog setup on our server that we used for quite some time. We stopped using it for a bit but are returning to it now. I didn’t import anything from the other blog system, I figured we’d basically just pick up where we left off.

I updated the software and everything seemed to work just fine. I made several posts using Windows Livewriter and everything appeared fine. My posts were intact and as expected.

I continued to update my site over the next couple of days – meaning I tried installing some plugins, most of which were uninstalled shortly thereafter when they didn’t do what I was looking for.

Then, at some point – I’m not sure when it happened actually, I noticed that some of my posts were missing a lot of the post. The top image was there and maybe a sentence or two and then the rest of the post was missing.

I dismissed it thinking maybe it happened while I was trying different themes – and once I got the site looking the way it needed to look, I would update those posts back to their complete state.

However, when I went to post another post today, I was unable to get past the first sentence. When I hit preview or save draft, it reverts back to just a one sentence post.

I tried deactivating any/all plugins that I installed. I’ve tried reverting to previous themes, I’ve even restored my blog back to my last backup which was after those posts were originally made but when they were still intact. Afterwards I went to the blog dashboard and received the message that my database needed to be updated. So I clicked ok and it went to the next screen where it “introduced me to the new dashboard” with all the little popups explaining the new features of the WP dashboard. My posts are still intact, but when I try to create a new post, I’m still having problems – it still wont’ save more than a sentence or two regardless of whether I post from within wordpress or from livewriter. I’ve tried using Chrome and FF and neither are working so I know it’s not an issue with the browser (that was a suggestion in one of the threads I read where others were having this problem).

I’m hoping someone can help me figure out what’s going wrong.

you can see my site here:

Right now – the only plugin I have activated is Akismet.
The theme I am using is Responsive full width featured area Child Theme but I have the same problem regardless of what theme I have installed, so I’m assuming that’s not an issue.

  • Have you tried:

    – switching to the default 2012 theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

What version of WordPress were you running previously and exactly how did you carry out the WordPress upgrade?

OK…I just tried everything you listed here.

First – I switched to the default 2012 theme. That didn’t solve the problem.

Then I renamed my plugins directory and went to the dashboard, tried posting and have the same issue. Renamed my plugins folder back to original and reactivated Akismet which was automatically deactivated due to it not finding the file.

I renamed my old wp-admin and wp-includes folders to -OLD. I then deleted all of the files in the main blog directory and uploaded a freshly downloaded and extracted copy of 3.5.1 – everything except the wp-content folder as you suggested. I just renamed the folders as per the instructions that I always have followed when upgrading rather than completely deleting them. However, it still didn’t fix the issue.

It seems when I try to post, it cuts it off at the end of the first sentence…regardless of whether it’s a period, exclamation point, question mark, etc. The first sentence is there…the rest is missing. Maybe that will give you some insight into my problems?? (hoping)

    Thanks btw!

ETA – Oh! I was previously running 3.4.2 before the upgrade

I seem to see full posts – at least so far as I can tell. What browser are you using?

Looks like you have some encoding issue:
    http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cardscraps.com%2Fblog%2F%3Fpage_id%3D2915&charset=%28detect+automatically%29&doctype=Inline&group=0

I’m using Chrome but tried in Firefox as well. I actually hadn’t kept any of the posts that aren’t posting correctly. However, I have added one now.

The full context of that post was “this is just a test – please disregard. Checking to see if full posts are showing.” But as you can see, it cuts off everything after the first period.

I am looking through the list on the validator and I’m not going to lie…most of that is greek to me.

I see the entire post in Chrome and Firefox – but on a Mac.

    I was referring to this:

Warning Legacy encoding windows-1252 used. Documents should use UTF-8.

So it seems like a Windows issue – are you using Windows Live Writer for these posts? Is there a setting for encoding?

    Thread Starter femsawyer

    (@femsawyer)

I used Windows Live Writer for the previous posts…but not the new one. I just opened Live Writer again and yes – there is a setting for encoding and it was set for iso-8859-1. Also, under Reading Settings in the WP Admin, Encoding for pages is set to ISO-8859-1. I didn’t set this up…at least not recently. I originally installed WP back in 2008 and have just upgraded.

Ok..so now it seems that I am using the wrong character set. How do I fix this issue?

    I appreciate your help.

See if setting it to UTF-8 in both places works.

    (@femsawyer)

OK…success! My full post is showing now. I hope that has fixed that issue.

One more question. I completely rolled my site back to a previous database backup (among a bunch of other undo’s) to try and figure out this problem. But – before I rolled it back, I did make a new database backup. I should be able to upload the newest backup and then ensure that the settings are once again set to UTF-8 before proceeding, correct?

I’m just hoping not to have to redo everything that I’ve done over the past couple of days.

I really can’t say for sure, but it would seem like you can change those settings again if need be once you’ve restored to newer one.

OK…so far, so good. Thank you so much for your help!
