New to WordPress, mysql, and apache

    I successfully installed WordPress locally using XAMPP. I don’t know a lot about Apache and mySQL but if I install locallly but wanted to upload to a remote server, does that server also have to have mySQL? I found out my hosting account with my ISP does not included mySQL.

    Sorry if this is a strange question, but I am just learning what apache, mysql, and php are. I thought that if you installed locally then all you have to do is FTP to the site like other web authoring programs.

    While it is true that you can just FTP your files to your hosting service, the actual server it goes to must still support MySQL. That underlying database functionality is the core of what makes WordPress work. You might want to check with your hosting service to see if they can just move your domain over to a server that supports that or check out a new hosting service. The WordPress minimum requirements are actually pretty basic and hosting services that offer them are numerous and cheap.

    Thanks ptvguy. Currently, my ISP does not provide mySQL to the hosting accounts that are included for free as part of the DSL account, but that they have individual hosting plans that include mySQL databases. I’ll probably go with one of the WordPress recommended hosting providers such as BlueHost. For $7/month, no setup fees, and no long term commitments, I’ll give them a try.
