Can’t generate permalinks

    What exactly is “Override .htaccess Support “? I know that I need to change permissions to my .htaccess file to use permalinks. I don’t see an .htaccess file (I exposed hidden files via FTP) so I created my own, and FTP’d it, twice to my domain directory and twice to my WP directory, and gave it appropriate permissions. Each time this process yielded disasterous results (errors, no CSS [depending on browser]). When I deleted the .htaccess file, my site functioned normally. What am I missing?
    (I use WP 2.0.5.)

    If your blog is in a subdirectory, like example.com/blog – you need the .htaccess file for WordPress ONLY in the “blog” directory. And only once 🙂

    Since we cannot see the disastrous results… it’s difficult to guess.

    By “twice” I meant two seperate occasions. By “disasterous” I meant an error page in accessing my site (Safari); and a normal front page (first time no CSS) but “error” log-in page (Firefox). I have also edited the “wp-includes/vars.php” file to “trick” WP into “thinking” I’m using Apache (which I in fact am using) to no avail.

    From this point on I can’t follow, sorry.
    On a normal Apache server you don’t have to do any kind of tricks. Who’s your host?

    I got the edit vars.php thing in WP documentation. (Maybe a neophyte wasting time, but no harm done.) I use IX Webhosting who assure me that they support the mod_rewrite Apache module. WP 2.0.5 installed by MichaelH at install4free.

    Long story. Suffice to say I managed to sort things out and everything functions well.
