Both your examples are absolutely wrong.
Those comments are NOT displayed on the main site (aka homepage) of the blog but in single post views.
What you want is not impossible but it is not simple. Search for “comments on index” and similar keywords…

A quick question from a total newbie and apologies if it has a really simple solution. I want to display comments to a post on my blog directly under the post itself.
I do not want people to have to click on a link marked Comments (21) or such like.
