• I recently came across a strange problem. When some people share posts on Facebook, a 404 page is being shared on its own.

Naturally, I contacted the plugin owner for help. He claims that everything is fine on his end. He tells me that it might theme related or malware.

So I start looking up sites on Facebook that use wordpress. I found that this is happening to other people as well. People with different themes and plugins.

I wonder if wordpress is to blame here? It’s the only thing all the different sites have in common.
Why is the same link being listed one more time after the “U=”?

It seems like someone arrives at site123.com.. shares an article from the site and the share link automatically becomes site123.com/u=site123.com/ It’s a page that does not exist.

From what I’ve seen, this problem started for everyone in August. I cannot find this problem in July

Here is a screenshot of the problem:

  • It is confusing what plugin you are referring to when you say

“Naturally, I contacted the plugin owner for help. He claims that everything is fine on his end. He tells me that it might theme related or malware.”

Initially, I assumed it was a problem with my share buttons plugin (mashshare). I contacted the owner and after he looked into it, he is certain that the problem is not the plugin.

I feel this is true because other sites have this “page not found” error too and they don’t even use mashshare.
