The blacklist works in specific cases but you may hurt yourself getting it to work reliably. If you’re not opposed to having a WordPress.COM account then Akismet is a good solution and has a good hit rate for spam.

Are you getting any mail from your WordPress site?

If not then you may want to consider this plugin.

It’s a good “go to” plugin when a WordPress system has mail delivery problems. If you have a GMail account it’s very good to send the email to Google for delivery.
