This plugin clean your titles (post slugs) sanitizing –not deleting– non-english characters. E.g. before “á”, after “a”; before “ç”, after “c”; before “ñ”, after “n”.
Just download, unzip, upload to wp-content/plugins/, login and activate it… that’s all, folks!
The plugin support characters of many languages, like: spanish, catalan, gallego, french, portuguese, dutch, german, etc.
Please, let me know about your use of it or any improvement you do 🙂

Great idea, but it doesn’t seem to work work with Umlauts: ä ö ü will simply be deleted and not shown as a o u, as I hoped 😉

thewalrus: I don’t know what can be wrong, but it’s working for me too (a little demo for you 🙂 )
Are you using WP 1.2 Final (Mingus)? I couldn’t see your WP version nowhere…

    Hmm. That’s strange.
I’m using WP 1.2 Final, the plugin is activated and no other plugin is used. So it should work. But it doesn’t 🙁

    I’m soooo stupid.
I found out what’s wrong. I didn’t know that the plugin will only “clean” new titles. I’ve written a new entry with an umlaut and it works well. So sorry for my “complaint” 😉

    No prob 🙂
If you want to sanitize your old titles too you can go to edit each post, delete the post slug and submit the changes. The plugin will write the post slug again but respecting the non-english chars.
Anyway, I don’t recommend that if you have your pages indexed by Google or other SE because you will loose your old indexed URIs.

Unfortunately it doesn’t work in Czech 🙁

Marvin: I’ll check it out looking for a solution.
Do you know what are the html entities for chars with “ˇ” (like Ä›, for example)? It could help 🙂
    Thanks for your feedback!
PS: the plugin is working fine, at least, with “ý á í é ú”.

ala_747: As someone who has a bilingual blog, I say: Great Work. I won’t use it once I get on a server that uses mod_rewrite. The character codes for more accented characters — you’ll need those with the hacek, are, eg, here:
    http://setis.library.usyd.edu.au/stanford/symbols/entities.html
(I think it would be great if all the letter-type characters of ISO-8859-15 and -2 would be provided for a “European” type URL encoding. I have absolutely no idea how eg Asian language handle URLs, though.)

it dosnt work in persian language

    Hi! I’m using the plugin on WP 1.2 final and it’s not working correctly. The “á, é, í, ó, ú” are not changed to “a, e, i, o , u”. Here’s my site (it’s only for experiments).

    Hope someone can help. Saludos!

greatgoron: the plugin is ISO-8859 (Latin chars) based and don’t work fine on UTF-8 based blogs. If you change your charset encoding it will work ok.
