I allowed an update to Advanced Access Manager and it completely broke the admin dashboard. I was getting 404 errors on any of the admin pages, Users, Profiles, etc. Plugins completely disappeared from the menu and I received an access denial when I tried to access the page directly.

I do not recall which version but it was an Alpha release. I tried every setting combination and still could not get them to work.

I manually removed the plugin and directory which as expected removed all access to admin widgets.

I manually uploaded Advanced Access Manager v3.0 Beta into the plugins menu and it started throwing parsing errors when I tried to start any of the other menu items. I renamed the directory and now I can use the items still showing on the admin menu.

Direct URL access to the plugins page returns an empty page.

    I need two things:
    1) Instructions to manually install a STABLE version of AAM or effect a refund and help eliminating all changes made by AAM.
    2) Instructions to gain access to my plugins if # 1 fails.

I am the owner of the site and it is privately hosted. I have direct and FTP access to all files.

  • Hi Dragonfighter,

Looks like you’ve done a bit of work/mess on your website with AAM.

So lets step back and do everything right way. First of all when you uploading files via FTP make sure that you are using Binary file transfer instead of ASCII. This will eliminate parser errors.

After you upload the AAM 3.0 Beta version and it does not work for you, please send me your PHP error log to [email protected]

    Vasyl,

Thanks for getting back with me. FTP is now set to binary and I have AAM showing in the admin manual. Now the question is, do I check the items if I WANT access or if I WANT to restrict access?

Once we are done there I’ll see where we are.

I added “edit_plugins” and activate_plugins” to the capabilities so now I have my plugins back in the admin menu.

However, I tried to check both “Edit Themes” and “Update Themes” and am now getting the following error:

Failed to grand capability – WordPress policy

    Hi Dragonfighter,

The Backend Menu or Metaboxes & Widgets have the same behavior as before. If you want to restrict access to resource, you check it (that is why it is red color checkbox).

The reason you see the message “Failed to grand capability…” is that because WordPress by itself does not allow to have that capability assigned to your user. If you familiar with PHP, you please refer to the WordPress core function map_meta_cap for more information.

    Regards,
    Vasyl
