 * Hi all, thanks for reading and perhaps assisting. Please note that I have a rudementary
understanding of programming, and little of databases. At best I can do a mean
google search … This is a long post, if in a hurry, skip to the last two paragraphs.
 * I messed up my website. Completely. I updated wordpress, all worked fine. Then
I started updating plugins, but, as I was in a hurry, I just clicked update on
all of them, and after a while I just closed the page, not thinking again to
check everything. Last week some-one told me my website was not loading, so I
checked and see that it was not working.
 * I went online, but I could not access my wp-admin page at all. So I tried doing
a restore from a previous backup, but that also did not work. While it restored
the blog/website, it did not display my website.
 * Then the comedy of errors started. My host allowed the installation of various
applications, plugins etc. via the controlpanel (webonline), and I use softalicious.
 * I uninstalled WordPress, and reinstalled but in a sub-folder. It installed, but
I could not see the new WP installation. So I uninstalled and installed in the
root. That failed, giving me some .access error (could not overwrite the file).
After a few retries I managed to get it installed in the root and I could see
my new WP page on my website. I tried restoring my backup, but again I failed
and could not access my website. So I thought to just redo the website, as it
was long due for a new theme.
 * I previously used a company to do a website for me, but this time I thought I
would do it myself, learning a bit in the process. So I repeated the process
of uninstalling and reinstalling WP, got to the Hello World stage on my website.
Tried to install a new theme, but that failed. Tried a few more times, all fail.
So in despiration, I contaced my web host with the error and was told that my
website is still hosted on a-end-of-live server and that I need to migrate to
a new server that can allow the installation of WP themes. I I agreed to the “
upgrade”. That happened last week, and, while I can now install themes, I now
cannot see my backup via the wordpress control-panel. I can access it via the
file manager and did download it to my PC.
 * After spending 2 days on this I decided to just redo the website from scratch(
it is not that big anyway). I read a bit on WAMP and a local server, but I am
worried about recreating the database (users and passwords and names which I
cannot remember). I do not want to spend another day and still be out of luck.
 * So I extracted the tar.gz file and managed to get my images, but now I need to
get to the content (my posts). But there is a million and one php files, where
do I start getting my content ?
 * The page I need help with: _[[log in](https://login.wordpress.org/?redirect_to=https%3A%2F%2Fwordpress.org%2Fsupport%2Ftopic%2Faccess-content%2F%3Foutput_format%3Dmd&locale=en_US)

 * Your posts are stored in the database, specifically in the `wp_posts` table.
There are plenty of articles out there that will help you get you through of
restoring your site, best is probably if you do that without any plugins or themes
activated. I found one article that, running quickly through it, appears to help
you in achieving just that: [https://pagely.com/blog/reset-wordpress-website-without-plugin/](https://pagely.com/blog/reset-wordpress-website-without-plugin/)
 * Note, I am not the author of the article, nor did I ever try doing what is being
described there, so feel free to either use it or find another one that works
better for your needs. Ultimately you will have to follow the one that works
best for your needs and specific skill set.
 * I hope this helps.
