Add a column or Sidebar

We have a site up and running (although still lacking some content) footyviews but I have been asked to add another column or sidebar to it so more content can be included.
We’re quite keen to keep the theme we are currently using, is it possible to increase the number of columns or sidebars without changing the entire theme?
Any help would be much appreciated.
