Add slider without extra sidebar?

Greetings,
My active theme allows me to use a page composer for my home page. I love the slider at the top, but i’d rather it not take up the full screen. I would like to have it look like the slider on my category pages, where the sidebar can fit in next to it. Also, it would be cool if i could insert a banner ad above or below my post thumbnails on the homepage, but if i add any custom content with the page composer, it wants to separate it from the posts, adding space or making the sidebar repeat itself. My theme said that they cannot offer any solutions for this, but will only consider adding those changes to the next update (i doubt it). Hope all that makes sense..any help is appreciated.
