# Adding different domain to multisite

 * I was previously using WordPress MU 2.8.2 in which to add a new site which resides
   on the same server, all I had to do was add the new domain name and a “/” for
   the path, click “Create Site” and was up and running within minutes.
 * I just installed Multisite 3.7.1 and am having no luck at all getting this to
   work.
 * I Installed per the instructions here: [http://codex.wordpress.org/Create_A_Network](http://codex.wordpress.org/Create_A_Network)
 * Installed the MU Domain Mapping plugin Networked Activated, moved the necessary
   file and added code to config.php, and added server ip where required.
 * Main Site: [http://www.handheldtesting.com](http://www.handheldtesting.com)

   Site that I’m trying to add to multisite: [http://www.lancabletester.net](http://www.lancabletester.net)
   Sites are both on same server (192.186.250.162)
 * I go to Add New Site from Newtwork Admin.
 * The site address it is asking for is [http://www.handheldtesting.com/](http://www.handheldtesting.com/)“
   ________”
 * I believe this is where my issue may be. As I do not want to add a subdomain.
   Either way, I put in “lancabletesters” add a site title and email. Then click“
   Add Site”
 * I then edit the site I just created, changing the Domain from handheldtesting.
   com/lancabletesters to lancabletester.net and change the path to “/”. Again,
   I do not know if this is correct to do.
 * I then go into the domain mapping plugin, set the id of the site I just created
   and add “[http://www.lancabletester.net&#8221](http://www.lancabletester.net&#8221);
   for the domain, uncheck the “Primary” box, and save.
 * This is the point where I am now, not sure where to go from here.
 * Any help is much appreciated.
 * Thanks,
    Ken

 * You were previously using WPMU wrong.
 * You were NEVER supposed to add new domains like that. You’re supposed to do this:
 * 1) Make a new site (domain.com/sitename)
    2) Map it via [http://wordpress.org/plugins/wordpress-mu-domain-mapping/](http://wordpress.org/plugins/wordpress-mu-domain-mapping/)

 * Ok, I called godaddy support trying to get any help that I could get. They told
   me to create an addon domain for lancabletesters.net.
 * So now, handheldtesting.com/lancabletesters and lancabletesters.net are pointing
   to the same place.
 * I added the site handheldtesting.com/**lancabletesters** into multisite, then
   went into mapping and added site id = 3, which is what the id of that subdomain
   is, and added [http://lancabletester.net/](http://lancabletester.net/) as “Domain”.
 * Nothing is coming up yet, other than an index page on both the subdomain and
   the .net.
 * Not sure what I am doing wrong, any help is appreciated.
 * Thanks,
    Ken

 * Hi Mika,
    Thanks for the response.
 * > 1) Make a new site (domain.com/sitename)
 * I have a site with multisite installed already “handheldtesting.com” does it
   need to be installed on a subdomain instead?
 * > 2) Map it via [http://wordpress.org/plugins/wordpress-mu-domain-mapping/](http://wordpress.org/plugins/wordpress-mu-domain-mapping/)
 * I think i may not be using the mapping plugin correctly. Though I have read all
   the instructions and watched all the videos I could find.
 * Thank you for helping.
 * Appreciated,
    Ken

 * It’s not an ‘add on’ domain. That usually makes it so you have a special folder
   on your main domain for the new domain… and [http://lancabletester.net/](http://lancabletester.net/)
   is pointing to it’s own location so that’s probably what’s up here.
 * You want to PARK a domain: [http://support.godaddy.com/help/article/8878/adding-parked-domains-to-your-cpanel-shared-hosting-account?locale=en](http://support.godaddy.com/help/article/8878/adding-parked-domains-to-your-cpanel-shared-hosting-account?locale=en)

 * Thanks Mika 🙂
 * I tried doing this, but I get the message…
 * > lancabletester.net is already configured.
 * I assume I need to undo making it an addon domain from earlier somehow?
 * Thanks So Much,

 * Ok I have now removed the addon domain, and created a parked domain with [http://lancabletester.net/](http://lancabletester.net/)
 * Not sure where to go from here.

 * Ok, something has happened.
 * lancabletester.net is now redirecting to handheldtesting.com
 * So… some progress has been made, but something is still a bit off 😉

   mapping..
 * The mapping isnt showing up when I go to [http://handheldtesting.com/lancabletester/wp-admin](http://handheldtesting.com/lancabletester/wp-admin):/
 * Anyone with any ideas?
 * Thanks,

 * It wasn’t showing because I was trying to add the sites in thru the network admin
   dashboard, by adding site id etc. Everythin is fine now.
 * Thanks
