adding widgets to a theme

I’m using Twenty Eleven theme. Under Appearances — Widgets, there are a very limited number of widgets. How do I upload or add (not sure of the lingo) more widgets, such as the Twitter widget, to the theme so they are available. I know more Widgets exist but don’t know how to find them and make them available on my site. Thanks.
