AJAX problem

I am trying to hook up a raphaeljs driven map that uses ajax to call info from an xml file. I have gotten all this to work but have narrowed the problem down to the ajax call in the javascript. I am an AJAX noob and need some help making thise come together. The current script works fine outsite of wordpress.

I put the whole script here, but as you can see, the ajax call is near the top and the info gained from the call is used to generate most of the map information. I appreciate any help I can get.
