# Altering Plugin Source Code – The Events Calendar

 * I’m new to wordpress and I’d like to have a go at editing the source code for
   a plugin -the events calendar. I’d like to try and include a dropdown menu for
   categories and have found some code snippets I’d like to try featured in [this thread](http://wordpress.org/support/topic/plugin-the-events-calendar-list-all-categories-get-next-event-thumbnail):
 * My questions are, where can I find the file to try these out in?
    Does wordpress
   offer a way to back these files up or do I have to do this myself manually? Do
   I have to download wordpress myself or can I acheive this code ‘tweaking’ in 
   the website dashboard in the browser?
