The category dropdown is dependent on the previous selects.
It displays only the categories that have products for the selected make and model.
So it is possible to make it visible only for the page that has the make and model already selected (like the search results page).
There is a modification for it:

Regarding the “Make category drop-down visible” that works fine, but in the initial search using the horizontal code, I’d like the category option to always be visible. This is due to my website having products which always consist of either “Performance Parts” or “Vehicle Body Parts”,
An example, a user would like to search only for performance parts for a volkswagen golf mk6 2012.
The dropdowns should be, MAKE: Volkswagen, MODEL: MK6R, YEAR: 2012, CATEGORY (Ideally this would be “Product Type”): Performance Parts.

It will become enabled when the make, model and year are selected.
