Apparently, this plugin is dead and latest version has a lot of issues with latest WP versions.

Which alternatives would you suggest as replacement?

I suggest that you look in this thread, where some promising alternatives are mentioned:

However, my qTranslateX is still soldiering on also with WP 4.9.4 without problems.

Thanks for the link Jannik. Mine is still soldiering on too, long may it last, but I have noticed that some of the widgets in the latest versions of WP are no longer compatible. Not too terrible but hope it doesn’t get worse.
