• I’m trying to put together a wordpress blog on an outside-hosted site.
I want to add wordpress.com stats to the blog. Can this be done or am I missing something?
The plugin wants an API key but the only way to get one seems to be to take a WordPress.com blog–yet plugins are only supposed to work on outside hosted sites–or to get a domain name through WordPress, whereas I already have one set up elsewhere.
One other thing–can I associate an outside-hosted blog with the wordpress.com account I got for my earlier wordpress.com blog, which I’m no longer using?
I’m sure I’m just in over my paygrade here-I’m not a programmer–but I’m confused and would appreciate any help you guys can offer.Thanks.

Not quite. You need a wordpress.com account – not a blog. Or you could look at http://akismet.com.

    Right, an account, sorry.
But when I try to sign up for one, it gives me the option of starting a wordpress.com blog or paying to have them set up a domain for me. Neither of those is what I need, I just need the API key to run the stats plugin.

    What am I missing here?

Sign up for just a username: https://en.wordpress.com/signup/?user=1

    How?
It asks for a blog address.
I must be incredibly dense–sorry–but I don’t see any option to get just a username.

Did you try the link I posted?

Okay, I figured out part of the problem.
I was logged in with a user name–I’ve already got a wordpress.com blog that I’m not going to use anymore but it saw that and wasn’t offering me just a username. I’ve just opened a new account with a different username and email.
Shouldn’t I be getting an email with the API key now? It hasn’t arrived.

Log into your new account. The API key will be listed in the account admin area.

I can’t. It tells me I have an invalid username.
You know, I used to program websites. It’s been a while but I’m not clueless. If I can’t set up a password and a username, they’re making this too damn difficult.

Okay, I just set up another username and password and again when I go to log in, it tells me it’s invalid.
    I don’t think it’s me anymore.
    There’s something wrong here.

It tells me I have an invalid username.

    What does? Askimet? wordpress.com?

    wordpress.com
