 * I’m have the Mailchimp for WP Lite plugin installed on my site. I’m trying to
   connect using Mailchimps API key but they’re still not connecting. I contacted
   the plugin’s designer and among other things he suggested posting my problem 
   here.

 * They propobly was just small level of customer service, because, API is their,
   not wordpress. Try to contact technical advisor.
