Apply discount if adding multiple items

I need a buy 6, get a discount rule. The discount works perfect if I add 6 of an item at the same time but not if I add the item one at a time. I need it to work if the cart has 6 of the item in it. Each item is custom and thus cannot be added with a quantity of 6.
