Yes plugin setup correctly. Just make sure the display name is set correctly in user profile. Because display name is the field where WPES matching the query.
If this does not work then it could be compatibility issue, I mean some other plugin or theme overriding the search query. So please disable all plugin except WPES and switch to one of the default theme e.g. twenty twenty does it work?

I don’t have Users, just Authors. Does this work only with Users as Authors?
Sorry but by Users I mean all of the site users including admins, authors, subscribers.

No, WPES has no affect of user role. If any user (author, editor, admin) has created post/page/custom post type in the site this should work.
Ok, so they actually have to be Users with some type of WP presence/account? I have “guest authors” who have no association with WP, just text in the “Author” field.

Yes, the feature is designed for WordPress users. Not sure how you have setup the site for guest authors but as far as I understand it is not possible without WordPress API.
Please share more details with steps to setup (plugin, theme, custom code) the same environment locally. Then only I will be able to understand provide you a solution.
