Backing up WP issues

A client of mine decided to switch servers and by doing so “backed” up his wordpress site by just copying everything that was in the WP directory on their server via FTP. My question is, where do the posts live? Where can I find the content as when they uploaded the “back-up” the site had not content. Is there a specific file?
