BackWPup temp files

i am seeing a lot of temp files in …/wp-content/uploads/backwpup-6304e-temp/ file names pclzip-xxxxxxxxxx.tmp. these are taking up several hundred mb. i also have .htacess and index.php in there. can i safely delete these files?
