$base parameter in wp-config.php ?

    Hi All,
    I am trying to configure subblogs for a Multiblogs install of WP (see my post some days ago in this forum) and I have one question I have no answer.

    What is the difference in wp-config.php between the parameter :
    $base = '/wordpress/';

    and the following one :

    define( 'PATH_CURRENT_SITE', '/wordpress/' );
