Support » Fixing WordPress » Bug: Image link gets removed when caption is added

  • Step 1: Add an image block in the editor for a post
Step 2: Turn the image into a link by adding a link by click the chainlink icon and pasting a URL
Step 3: Add a caption for the image

When following these steps, the link seems to get deleted from the image. To me, and I assume others, this is unexpected behavior.

I apologize if I’m posting this in the wrong place or format, I’m not familiar with the WordPress ecosystem.

I can’t reproduce that. I followed your steps and the image’s link remained.

This may be a plugin or theme conflict. Please attempt to disable all plugins, and use one of the default (Twenty*) themes. If the problem goes away, enable them one by one to identify the source of your troubles.

Hey Steven, sounds good. I did disable the plugins that I thought may have affected it, but I’ll try all of them next time and let you know if it’s still there.

Okay, I found the issue. It’s either a UX issue or I’m not used to the WP convention or something.

I was able to replicate this issue with all plugins disabled. It seems that when I paste the link, I need to hit the “return” or “enter” key after pasting the link. Otherwise, if I paste the link and click the caption field (with zero steps in between), the link does not get saved.

    Does that make sense? @sterndata

Yes. You have to click the arrow thingie to save the URL.

Makes sense. Do you think this is a UX issue or should this problem be attributed to the person not using the program correctly?

    It’s probably a bit of both. 🙂

The reason I ask is that if you agree that it’s a UX issue, I’d love to make this my opportunity to contribute to WP Core. It’s on my bucket list 🙂
