when i go to the calendar’s page, the widget in the sidebar that normally contains content, is overwritten with a version of the calendar widget. i can’t seem to figure out why this is, as the widget is a custom tooled one; a content block, to be precise. any suggestions on where to look?

what concerns me is that i haven’t even placed a calendar widget, so i don’t know why it’s showing at all! πŸ˜›

great plugin, just need to fix this glaring problem.

Sorry I’m not sure if I understood the problem. Perhaps a link would help, thanks

    okay. here’s some links:

    Normal Widget vs. Fubar Widget

hope that helps explain. thank you.

    I see,

but let’s rule out one possibility at the time

I would suggest first deactivating the other plugins and the theme, keep Google Calendar Events on the default theme and see if the problem persists – then reactivate the other plugins one at the time, and then the theme

also check for any errors in the page (Chrome Dev tools console)

if the error disappears, then the problem could be in the theme, such as widget areas, sidebars, etc.

try also updating all your widget areas/sidebars (move some widget should trigger an update)

if nothing changes will think of some other idea

i’ll give that a shot and let you know what happens.

sorry for the long reply delay. tried disabling all plugins and one-by-one re-enabling. i think it’s just a flat out conflict with the Custom Post widget. it overwrites anything in it. period. regardless of where it is. and we use that plugin everywhere, so ditching it is not an option.

what i can’t figure out is WHY it’s writing to that widget! i could see if i had placed a calendar widget, but right out of the box, BAM! so i’m not seeing why it’s trying to write to that widget when it hasn’t been called…

anyway. what else can i do to help fix this ‘feature’? πŸ™‚

    Thread Starter WhiteRau

    (@whiterau)

i should amend my previous in saying that it ONLY overwrites on the calendar page. the widget populates properly on every other page. when i said ‘regardless of where it is’ i was referring to position in either widget area (main, secondary), or order placed in the widget area (first, second, &c).

when i examine it with Firebug, i can’t see anything class-or-id-wise that would cause it to target the widget area (and ONLY on the one page)

    very, very odd. also frustrating.

    *bump*

really would like to get this sorted or i’ll just dump the plugin and move to something else…which i’d rather not do because everything else is awesome. but client is King… dammit. >_>

    Hi there,

didn’t want to leave you behind, it’s just I didn’t have a solution for you

from your description, the problem seemed to arise from a custom widget – I don’t control that code and it’s hard to keep track of all the possible interactions between plugins out there

are you creating the calendar by using a [gcal id=”123″] shortcode inside a text widget? I ask this only because I’ve seen some users doing so, instead using the specific calendar widget – the latter is recommended in any case, do not run shortcodes from a text widget – *in case* you are

Anyway, lately been working hard to push version 3.0.0 of this plugin out soon – currently available in beta and likely to be released next week. The new version has a lot of interesting new features and also a new, much simplified and tidier, widget.

You can get news of the beta here:
https://ww.wp.xz.cn/support/topic/simple-calendar-30-beta-now-available?replies=24 (note if you get a copy please do not install it on a live site yet, or have backups if you are sure of what you are doing) – by the end of today there should be a new, and likely final beta-2

heyo! we don’t have any custom widgets, (and yeah, sooo many plugins out there…), the name is a misnomer, we use the Custom Post Widget plugin which let’s drop in blocks of content and there are no shortcodes to speak of.

what strikes me as strange is that it is ONLY on the page that your calendar is on. it doesn’t recreate the widget, it just overwrites the content. i’ve tried other themes and the same effect persists.

if there’s anything i can provide, information-wise, let me know.

at the beginning you wrote ‘widget is a custom tooled one’ and asked for some link, meaning to the website so I can see the markup or inspect the console – but now I understood which plugin you are using

The Custom Post Widget allows you to display the contents of a specific custom post in a widget on in the content area using a shortcode. (from the plugin description)

so how are you using these two plugins together?

are you just using these separately? ie calendar in its own widget (the one which is bundled with) and more widgets created with custom post widget or the single post displayed contains content managed by this plugin? What are the contents of the custom post widget? the “blocks of content” you just mentioned.

Anyway if it’s a plugin incompatibility, the solution might be as well with version 3.0 I mentioned earlier on. If you’re still in development you could give the beta a spin (on a test/staging site and do backups if you have sensitive data or if you plan to restore previous version 2.4 of this plugin) and see if the problem solves.

    Thread Starter WhiteRau

    (@whiterau)

yeah. the ‘custom tooled plugin’ was a mistake. we opted for the Custom Post Widget instead. my information was bad at the time i was writing. i apologize for that.

the Custom Post Widget embeds chunks of content into a sidebar widget. so we can build reusable content and then just drop it into the widget. the plugin handles everything, so there aren’t even any shortcodes. we use one of them on the sidebar to post out location.

we don’t use a calendar widget at all. which is where the confusion comes from. and what’s weird, is that it doesn’t write to any of the other widgets… oddball city! O_o

i’ll give the beta a spin and see what happens. in the meantime, we’re using a widget context plugin to basically turn off the widget while on the calendar page. not what we want, but beats two calendars on the same page.

keep you posted regarding the beta’s performance.

    thank you.

We have released version 3.0.0 so we suggest you update to that when you get a chance. There are a lot of changes so we also suggest reading through this first for more details about the update: http://docs.simplecalendar.io/update-2-4-to-3-x/

Let us know if you have any other questions.

    Thanks!
