I deactivated Wordfence from the WordPress Plugin page. Suddenly a white screen showed with the following message:
“Warning: Unknown: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in Unknown on line 0

Fatal error: Unknown: Failed opening required ‘/home/iselinur/public_html/wordpress/wordfence-waf.php’ (include_path=’.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php’) in Unknown on line 0”

I do not have any access to the admin backend now. If I try to re-log in, I recieve the same message page.

I tried renaming the Wordfence folder, but nothing changed. The website seems to be running, I just cannot access the backend.

    HELP!

  • Hi there,

Are you able to delete WordFence plugin directory using FTP or Cpanel file manager?

Yes, I can delete it – I did rename it so that it would not be accessed.

I did delete the Wordfence directory. No change. I cannot access the login to the WordPress backend. Same white page with message shown above.

In addition, when I load the front end, my browser still shows me as being logged in. Anytime I try to access the features of the backend, I get the error page.

OK, I figured it our. I found a .user.ini file in the WordPress root which referred to the specific Wordfence lines above. I made a backup of that file and then cleared the reference to Wordfence and retried.

I now have Dashboard access again!
