BP checkins should work with most WordPress theme as it benefits from the BuddyPress theme compat feature. It also includes a fallback for BP default theme / child themes. And if a standalone BuddyPress theme is using add_theme_support(‘ buddypress’) it should also work. * What you describe is although weird as it means the ajax Query string is not taking in account the place filter, it doesn’t seem to be a template issue, but a bp_ajax_querystring one.
