# Cannot Edit Existing Posts

 * Blog: [danashultz.com/blog](http://danashultz.com/blog/)
 * After I updated Yoast SEO, it appeared but did not work and I could not insert
   media into a new post. (I hired someone, who may have fixed that problem but
   created others by restoring an old backup.)
 * I restored the latest backup. Now all posts are available, but I cannot edit
   them. The proper screen comes up, but there is no content. (Also, the diamond-?
   appears where certain special characters used to display properly.)
 * Google Analytics reports numerous crawling errors – apparently one for each of
   my 400+ posts, which it cannot find.
 * Based on other Support Forum answers:
 * 1. I deactivated all plugins; changed to Twenty Twelve default theme; logged
   out; cleared my browser cache (Firefox – problem occurs with IE, too); and logged
   back in. Problem still is there.
 * 2. I turned on SCRIPT_DEBUG in wp-config.php. The Browser Console shows dozens
   of errors, reproduced below:

 * Does the issue exist when you disable your plugins?

 * Yes. As stated in my original post:

 * Based on another answer I saw, I did a Re-Install Now from the Updates page.
   Problem *not* solved.

 * Try resetting the plugins folder by FTP. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin
   can still cause problems.
 * upload the latest default theme ([Twenty Fourteen](http://wordpress.org/themes/twentyfourteen))
   files and activate it…
 * switching to the default theme by renaming your current theme’s folder inside
   wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using FTP or
   whatever file management application your host provides.
 * re-uploading all files & folders – **except** the wp-content folder and the wp-
   config.php & root .htaccess files – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make
   sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new
   ones.

 * Thank you. Was able to do, so far, some of what you prescribed.
 * Hosted on Yahoo! Can do a fair amount with their File Manager.
 * Don’t know what it means to “reset” the plugins folder.

 * Thanks. (BTW, renaming two folders “-old” did not solve problem.)
 * Concerning re-install:
 * I see the wp-content folder. So I delete the two others, wp-admin and wp-includes?
 * I see wp-config.php. So I delete roughly two dozen other files, including one
   for Google Analytics?
 * I don’t see .htaccess. Could that be my problem?

 * Thank you. I downloaded 3.8.1.
 * It’s late evening here, so I think I should wait until tomorrow (worried about
   making an even worse problem).
 * I appreciate your walking me through this process. Will post results.

 * I followed these instructions:
 * > Download the fresh copy of wordpress and upload “wp-admin” and “wp-includes”

 * The problem still is there.
 * Does this mean there is a problem somewhere in my wp-content folder?

 * Wow! problem is still there. Interesting.
 * Please rename wp-content/themes and wp-content/plugins by adding “-old” to the
   end of the folder name. and upload themes and plugin from the fresh copy wordpress
   you downloaded.

 * Renamed themes-old. Found my original theme is no longer available, so I chose
   another (more like what I need than twenty fourteen). Problem still there: Edit-
   post screen lacks post content.
 * Renamed plugins-old. Had to add Yahoo! Customizable Permalinks plugin to make
   permalinks work. (Will add some others for better user experience.) Problem still
   there.
 * I see (through experience and research) that Yahoo! does not allow .htaccess
   file (through either their File Manager or FTP). Perhaps this is related to my
   problem and Google’s inability to crawl my blog, though it is not clear why this
   problem would pop up after four years.

 * Two significant developments:
 * 1. I created a new post, and I can edit it even though I can’t edit the old ones!
 * 2. Looking at Google crawl errors (for every post and page on my blog), I see
   that the URLs have only the post-name part of the Permalink, but not the preceding
   date portion (which always has been part of my blog’s Permalink structure).
 * I am optimistic that if I can figure out why Google is getting bad Permalink
   URLs, I can fix the post-edit problem, too.

 * After 2+ hours of hands-on analysis two days ago, [Anca Mosoiu of Tech Liminal](http://techliminal.com/about/)
   in Oakland, CA solved my problem – which was pretty obscure, and while we know
   where it was, we don’t know exactly what it was.
 * The problem was not in any of the scripts. It was somewhere in one of the MySQL
   databases. The resolution came when a .gz backup was downloaded to a local PC,
   unzipped, re-zipped, then uploaded. From that point on, I was able to edit posts,
   and Google was able to crawl my blog.
