Cannot upload any images

Since yesterday, I cannot upload any images. When using the media uploader I get the error: The uploaded file could not be moved to wp-content/uploads/2014/05.

I’ve tried updating permissions on the wp-content directory to 766, 767, 775, 777 and then back to 755. Nothing works. When I FTP in, it looks like the files are getting posted, but they aren’t actually there and wp can’t see them. Doesn’t seem to matter what image file type or size I use, this happens every time.

I’ve tried disabling all plugins and changing themes to see if this helped and no dice. I’m already running version 3.9.1.

What else could it be?
