# Cant update wordpress or plugins

 * Cant update WordPress or plugins automatically. Have contacted host and they 
   say it is an issue with wordpress. The following is the error: PHP Fatal error:
   Call to undefined function mbstring_binary_safe_encoding() in /home/h25thew/public_html/
   wp-admin/includes/class-wp-filesystem-ftpext.php on line 121

 * Try:
    – switching to the default theme by renaming your current theme’s folder
   inside wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using
   [FTP](http://codex.wordpress.org/FTP_Clients) or whatever file management application
   your host provides.
 * – [resetting the plugins folder](http://codex.wordpress.org/FAQ_Troubleshooting#How_to_deactivate_all_plugins_when_not_able_to_access_the_administrative_menus.3F)
   by FTP or phpMyAdmin.
 * – re-uploading all files & folders – **except** the wp-content folder and the
   wp-config.php & root .htaccess files – from a **fresh** download of WordPress.
   Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the
   new ones.
 * – running the upgrade manually via wp-admin/upgrade.php

 * Thanks esmi you for the ideas. I was going to try that but an additional problem
   came up when I disabled all the plugins I could not log in to the administration
   panel as Theme my Login when disabled currently removes any ability to log in.
   I was hoping it would revert to the standard wordpress login but nothing is that
   simple. I was unsure about doing a manual update with the plugin enabled.

 * Try asking on that plugin’s dedicated sub-forum about how to revert to the standard
   WordPress login.
