Categories disappeared

I use Events Manager which easily creates and stores event categories. Without any upgrade, suddenly all of the categories are missing. I deactivated all plug-ins and changed to a default WP theme and still the categories will not display. I know that the previous categories are still there because I can see them in some pages but I can no longer use any category and new ones I make will not save.
