 * I am testing this plugin on our staging site.
 * I have installed it without a problem.
 * However, when I put the shortcode on a page and try and save that page I get
   a “502 bad gateway” error. The page actually does save anyway so when I go back
   to it, the shortcode is there.
 * However, on the front end, where the slider should appear, I also get an error.
   First the page loads extremely slowly and then I get a script error.
 * If I remove the shortcode all works fine (but I have no slider…).
 * The page I need help with: _[[log in](https://login.wordpress.org/?redirect_to=https%3A%2F%2Fwordpress.org%2Fsupport%2Ftopic%2Fcausing-502-bad-gateway-error-and-script-error%2F%3Foutput_format%3Dmd&locale=en_US)
   to see the link]_

 * Just in case someone is currently looking at this issue: I will now test deinstalling
   the latest version and installing the older version 1.2.8 to see if it works
   as it should.
 * Will report back here later.

 * Well, that was quick. 1.2.8 works fine.
 * It does not give a 502 error when saving the page with the short code.
 * And it does not give a script error on the front end on the page that has the
   slider.
 * So, WARNING about updating to 1.3.x.
 * I’d appreciate if you let me know here when a function 1.3.x is available.

 * Hi,
 * Well, I cannot do that at this moment, since I have some urgent work I need to
   do and I will use the old version 1.2.8 that functions correctly for me.
 * Once this is done I will reinstall the latest version – the one that gives an
   error – and I will then contact you with the login so you can see it.

 * [@wponlinesupport](https://wordpress.org/support/users/wponlinesupport/) I’ve
   deleted your offer to login to your user’s site. I’m am 100% sure you mean well
   but please _never ask for credentials on these forums._

 * Now for the why: The internet is a wonderful place full of very nice people and
   a few very bad ones. I’m sure everyone here is very nice however, by giving some
   ones keys to your house you are trusting they wont steal anything. Likewise the
   person who takes the keys is now responsible for the house FOREVER.
 * If something was to go wrong, then you the author may well legally become liable
   for damages, which they would not normally have been as their software is provided
   without warranty.
 * **Please be aware that repeatedly asking for credentials will result in us asking
   you to repeatedly stop before escalating up to the plugins team.**

 * [@jdembowski](https://wordpress.org/support/users/jdembowski/) I’m a little confused
   here. Many support people ask for access to the site, although it is often done
   on the plugin’s own support forum. WPML is one very widely used plugin that does
   that, just as an example.
 * Of course, the login credentials would never be posted publicly on a forum but
   sent in a private email or similar such thing.
 * And one should of course better not give the credentials to a ‘live’ site.
 * I would have no big problem with giving someone access to our texting/staging
   site. How else would they be able to find the issue? Would be very difficult
   in many cases.
 * And after the debugging is done I would delete the credentials and also delete(
   and regenerate) the staging environment.
 * Or maybe you have some other suggested process to follow?

 * There’s nothing confusing here: that’s flat out not permitted in these forums.
   Any author who insists on that needs to consider removing their plugin from the
   WordPress repository. They can do what they want on their own site.
 * For example: WPML isn’t on this site. If they were then they would have the same
   restriction. On their site the can do as they please.
 * But here, authors will get into real trouble if they repeatedly do that.
 * > Or maybe you have some other suggested process to follow?
 * There are many ways for authors to get information you need and accessing the
   user’s site is not be one of them.
    - Ask for a link to the [http://pasetbin.com/](http://pasetbin.com/) log of
      the user’s web server error log.
    - Ask the user to create and post a link to their `phpinfo();` output.
    - Ask the user to install the [Send System Info plugin](https://wordpress.org/plugins/send-system-info/)
      and get the data that way.
    - Walk the user through [enabling WP_DEBUG and how to log that output to a file and how to share that file.](https://codex.wordpress.org/WP_DEBUG#WP_DEBUG_LOG_and_WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY)
    - Walk the user through basic troubleshooting steps such and disabling all other
      plugins except yours, switch to the Twenty Fifteen theme, clear their cache
      and cookies and try again.
    - Ask the user for the step-by-step on how they can reproduce the problem.
 * You get the idea.
 * Volunteer support is not easy. But these forums need to a safe place for all
   users, experienced or new. Anyone accessing users systems that way is a short
   cut that will get them into real trouble in these forums.

 * Jan,
 * Thanks for all that!
 * BTW, I’m not a plugin developer, just a user seeking assistance here once in
   a while.
