I would like to change the width to 940 which is the width of the page, should I do this in the CSS? Where would be best to do this within the CSS or short code?

in most cases there is no need to change the width, because the plugin uses the available space. If you think you really need this, add to the follwing css

.spreadshirt-items {
width:940px;
}
