# chmod on upload folder using remote db server

 * I recently did a fresh install of WordPress. This is the first time I’ve done
   so on this particular server and I had a couple hiccups I don’t usually see.
 * Having a database server other than localhost was the first thing. But that was
   simple enough to put the correct path in.
 * Then I had trouble with uploading images via the admin panel. It seems I can’t
   do this on this server without chmodding the uploads folder to 777.
 * Is this because the server is being accessed from the database, which is not 
   localhost?
 * Having folders 777 isn’t the best solution. Any suggestions?
 * The host’s tech support answer to this was…

   > or chmod. Yes having folders chmoded to 777 is not secure, but as I know many
   > blogs have this issue, because need to upload from http.

   localhost?_
 * No, it is because only with those permissions will the folder be writable. It
   is different on many hosts…
