# Custom CSS vs Stylesheet.ss

 * I was wondering why everyone on here forbids editing style.css while everyone
   on Youtube advises doing so. Isn’t it much easier to edit the file since what
   it takes at times to put “/*” “*/” on certain lines.
 * What’s all the fuzz about?

 * If you edit theme files, your changes will be lost when the theme is updated.
 * You don’t need any of the commented lines if you don’t want to use them.

 * You can still freely edit a style.css but only if you are using a child theme.

 * We care.
 * We have experienced people coming back to the forums and asking why nobody told
   them their changes would be erased.
 * Imagine following YouTube videos for a month, modifying your theme’s files and
   then and then the theme’s author releases an update. Image how you would feel
   knowing that a month’s worth of work has been erased.
 * Like most things, taking shortcuts are going to cause headaches in the future.
 * Why do people on YouTube not recommend it? Who knows. That’s not a question we
   can answer.
 * We also emphasise it in these forums to prevent other people that may be using
   forum threads as guidelines from picking up bad practices.
