 * My goal is to have my permalinks behave like this:
 * [http://www.colindunn.com/postname](http://www.colindunn.com/postname) (for specific
   posts)
    [http://www.colindunn.com/category](http://www.colindunn.com/category)(
   browse by category) [http://www.colindunn.com/page](http://www.colindunn.com/page)(
   browse by page)
 * BUT, when I change one it always breaks the other. Configuring my permalinks
   likes this:
 * [http://www.colindunn.com/%postname%](http://www.colindunn.com/%postname%)
 * Disallows browsing categories this way
 * [http://www.colindunn.com/category](http://www.colindunn.com/category)
 * I get a 404 error. And if I change the category base to %category% while the
   permalink is set to %postname% the individual posts break.
 * Anyone have a solution to this problem?

 * Try setting your post permalinks to `/%post_id%/%postname%/` and leave the category
   base blank. It still won’t be your ideal structure but I think it’s the closest
   you’ll get without potentially impacting on performance.

 * Thanks esmi (I seem to see a lot of you). This seems like a slightly better option
   then I have now yet I know what I am seeking is possible (I have seen it on other
   blogs). You seem to know quite a bit about wordpress. Any recommended reading
   for the someone like me, who has a basic understanding but needs to fill in the
   holes?

 * Alas, your suggestion didn’t work. When I used post-id/postname it breaks the
   category links. I can no longer access my portfolio category posts by visiting
   [http://www.colindunn.com/portfolio](http://www.colindunn.com/portfolio) …..
   So frustrating!

 * Aha! Found a plugin for anyone who is interested. “WP No Category Base” does
   the trick!
