 * I’m trying to design a custom search function that will **receive user supplied
   inputs, query a database table, retrieve rows and display in a page.**
 * I need a little idea how would I customize/overwrite the default search function
   to enable it handle SQL queries.

 * Suggest that you do what I did. Search the plugins, find one which has the techniques
   you need and adapt it from there. It is polite to retain an attribution to the
   author.
    I started with: “wp-csv-to-db” plugin by Ruhul Amin
