# Database Crashed

 * I was writing a post tonight and everything went south after several saves. All
   seemed fine beforehand.
 * I called my host and while on hold the site came back with no posts (I have over
   2500) and there was “garble” on the screen with some wordpress error notes over
   the sidebar layers.
 * I couldn’t copy anything down as the site went to a WordPress page that said
   no database connection available.
 * My host said my database crashed and they would elevate it to urgent and possibly
   save it to a current status, if not yesterdays last post, worst case scenario.
 * Is this a recurring problem as I was told or should I switch hosts. It seems
   my site (a political one) goes down frequently. I was also told I should periodcally
   clean up my Php files. Is this true or an excuse by the host?
 * Any constructive advise on this issue. Thanks.

 * wtf does **that** mean? ask your host — then tell them for me, that I said they
   are full of shit.
 * your host sucks. MySQL crashes that result in complete and total losses are VERY
   rare — for **ANY** web app that uses MySQL.
 * a few of your older threads indicate that you were thinking about going with
   Yahoo? did you? because you were kinda warned.
 * —
 * i work for a host, we have ONE site (not wordpress, but uses mysql) among 180
   + that has OVER 110 million database entries spread across 10,693 tables, and
   we, and I should add the previous host, have NEVER had a single issue, and never
   lost a single piece of data.
 * Granted we do cluster our MySQL servers.. just in case.

 * to clarify — we have one site, among 180 that share this one mysql cluster.
 * –Thats just that cluster, not a # representing how many sites we host in total.

 * In many years of building database-driven sites, I’ve never seen “database crashing”
   as a recurring problem. If your host seems to think it’s a recurring problem (
   which I read to mean that *they* have a recurring problem with it), I’d grab
   the last or best version of the database, the WordPress files, and move the site
   ASAP.
 * Really, you need a reliable host. If your site is popular, you may need a “beefier”
   web hosting account. But reliability is a must.

 * Thanks for the response and I agree I need a new host. First they got the site
   up but with errors in the comments area as follows:
 * > WordPress database error: [Can’t open file: ‘wp_comments.MYI’. (errno: 145)]
   >
   > SELECT COUNT(*) FROM wp_comments WHERE comment_approved = ‘0’
   > WordPress database error: [Can’t open file: ‘wp_comments.MYI’. (errno: 145)]
   >
   > SELECT COUNT(comment_ID) FROM wp_comments WHERE comment_approved = ‘spam’
 * Three different people responded to me and one mentioned moving my site to a
   different server. This is a recurring theme with them.
 * My data transfer has gone up alot and I’ve had to upgrade my package with them
   three times.
 * Thus far this weekend my problem has been sent to a higher level but no one seems
   to be working on it. To be honest this is a political blog and I believe too
   many problems have existed to be a coincidence. The problems I’ve had seem to
   come on a weekend or Friday evening when a Melissa is working. She’s the one
   that mentioned that I should clean my files. Yeah Right!
 * Now if anyone can offer some good hosts I’m listening.
 * Also, what’s the best way to backup my site once and have it ready to move FTP
   in the proper file format?
 * Thanks,
 * Don

 * I wouldnt go so far as to blame “Melissa” because your blog happens to be political.
   I see that more and more these days — people blaming issues on political vengeance
   or differences. The truth is, no-one really gives a crap about the content of
   someone else’s site, and Melissa is probably not up to speed with WordPress.
 * (No, Google doesnt censor Conservative blogs)
 * I work for a host, and believe it or not — most the problems occur during the
   evening and weekends. Traffic is up, jobs are running, and in accordance with
   Murphy’s law — there is only one person on staff.
 * As for hosting..A Small Orange — If I were still paying for hosting, that’s where
   you would find me.

 * I understand your point I was only suggesting a correlation but not a fact.
 * My “paranoia” has come because of numerous death threats, an array of indecent
   comments (now filtered) and other crazy things.
 * I would disagree, my experience tells me there are a select few who would like
   to bring me down. One, a former NASA employee, spends time discrediting me around
   the web. Sorry went off topic.
 * Now any suggestions on FTP and backup or does your suggestion for a host help
   with that?
 * Thanks again.

 * If it were me, I would just download all the files and directories inside your
   web accessible directory (public_html, usually). Keep the directory structure
   intact, and store it on your desktop, so you dont lose track.
 * The database bits .. if you have phpmyadmin available, you can just grab a dump
   of the database from within it.

 * I wrote to A Small Orange asking about transers and newer version setup.
 * I appreciate your help.
 * BTW, I can’t log into my hosts menu where all my files are stored. This is a
   first.
 * The drama continues.
