 * I would like for my WP 1.5 to open in a default category of my choosing. The 
   current situation is a mess with posts from all categories appearing when a visitor
   arrives at my blog.

 * Well it is not quite the mess you describe. By default it delivers your latest
   posts. Consult the Codex on conditional cats for the loop. (Its in the advanced
   section 🙂 )
