 * Hi, yes I have an old version. Anyway, I am getting these Deprecated errors everywhere.
   Also I would love help upgrading to a more recent version. Any help for the old
   World’s Best Mediator? 🙂

 * Thank you Krishna for responding. For some reason when I go through the link
   and all, I do not believe I have the computer expertise at this moment to follow
   that process. Any other thoughts Krishna or anyone?
 * Thank you.

 * Well, the options are pretty limited here.
 * You either have to bite the bullet, and dive right in to this…. or you pay someone
   to handle it for you. Google could help you find aresource there.
 * The important thing here if trying to go it alone, is to ensure you have full
   backups of all your files, and your database. That way if things go belly up,
   you can get restored to where you started.
 * It is a bit daunting, you have quite an upgrade ahead of you. Also…. don’t try
   to do the upgrade with plugins active. You’d probably be best to switch to the
   default theme too. That can take some of the variable out of the equation.
 * You’ll need to see if your plugins are still being maintained…. determine if
   there are compatible versions as you upgrade WP… you may need to hunt out new
   plugins that offer the same functionality – some of them fall by the wayside
   over the years.
 * I would almost be temoted to install a test site somewhere (a subfolder or something)
   of that old 2.6 version, and then practice an upgrade first… just to learn the
   ropes.

 * Hmmm… Thank you Reverend.
 * I am not even sure where my files are, database as well. Is this the only way
   to correct the Deprecate error that I am getting?
 * I do don’t totally even know what plugins are. I suppose I could consider, but
   the whole idea of test sites and all seems a tad beyond my expertise. Any other
   thoughts?
 * Thank you.
    Sincerely,
 * Jon

 * Pretty much what I’m guessing is happening here, is that the PHP version on your
   server has been upgraded since you installed the 2.6 version of WP.
 * So the old WP code was good for the old PHP…. but now you need new WP to go with
   new PHP….
 * in a nutshell, your WP needs upgraded to work well on your server…. the code
   be old!
 * Your files, as well as your database, are all on your host/server. This is probably
   going to go even further above your head unfortunately…
 * Do you have an individual you can turn to for ‘in person’ assistance? I can point
   you to resources on how to use FTP to back up your files, and phpmyadmin to back
   up your database. But I’m afraid I’ll just drive you nuts, and really be of no
   help at all…
 * The whole process is only hard the first time…. once someone shows you how it’s
   all done, it’s easy to work through subsequently…
 * It is, unfortunately, quite a manual process for you to upgrade right now. There
   is no real way to automate updating such an old install, as there are so many
   variables involved here.
 * Also…. does your host offer wordpress support/upgrade help? That’s a bit of a
   long shot…..

 * Hi Reverend,
 * I understand what you are saying. Yes, I do believe I could use the right person
   to help out in some way here. The previous person is not available right now.
   So I am at scratch. There is a WordPress meetup group on the 27th, but I blog
   frequently and would love to make progress before then.
 * There must be some way to address this.
 * Thank you again. Sincerely, Jon

 * Oh there definitely is! It’s just all manual!
 * [http://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Backups](http://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Backups)

   Here is the info on backups
 * Like I said earlier, it is essential to get this done first. If we have backups
   of everything, we can un-hose what may get hosed
 * That provides instructions for the database and links for how to do the files.
   The files are normally done through FTP
    [http://codex.wordpress.org/FTP_Clients](http://codex.wordpress.org/FTP_Clients)
 * Once things are backed up, it’s a matter of following the instructions [@krishna](https://wordpress.org/support/users/krishna/)
   linked
 * Also, Google may be your friend here. Everyone understands/reads things differently.
   So you may not thoroughly understand the codex links, but may be able to find
   tutorials written in a manner you can understand better
 * SOrry it can’t be any easier – upgrades need to be manual/incremental for such
   a huge upgrade. There are many things going on in the background which don’t
   allow for huge jumps. Once you are up to date, upgrading is automated.

 * Becoming familiar with FTP is also essential in case anything goes wrong. You
   may need to delete a plugin or something if a conflict arises, this is done through
   FTP, essentially a file manager for working remotely (with your server files)

 * Hi Reverend,
 * I believe we are starting to go around in circles here. The last person, said
   I should say things clearly. So I will clearly say, I believe I need some help
   with this, other than referrals to manuels etc.

 * That’s kind of what I’m getting at….
 * All we can really do is point you at the manuals. We don’t do personalized help
   here (like log onto your site kind of stuff). That’s the kind of help that pros
   get paid to do.
 * We can offer specific help when you get to a specific problem. But currently
   your overarching problem is that ‘you need to upgrade wordpress’. You haven’t,
   technically, gotten stuck at any particular part yet.
 * So, either you dive in, or you do not. I’m not sure exactly whet more help you
   need, unfortunately. To get started, you have links to everything you need. If
   you get to any particular portion in the process, and have a specific problem,
   we can offer specific help. But to try to describe how to upgrade WP, I would
   pretty much repeat what is in the links that have been provided.

 * Well I just finished a big project yesterday or at least a massive stage of it,
   so I believe I will take a day or two to consider all you have shared. Thank
   you kindly.
