 * is there a file in the wordpress directory (or sub-directory) that I can read
   that will tell me what the current version of WP is?
 * The footer at the bottom of the admin pages just says “Get WordPress 2.6.2” but
   that doesn’t help me know what version is currently running.

 * Yeah, I agree: one message at the top shouold be enough and the devs should have
   left the version number unaltered at the bottom. It was a not-so-wise decision…
 * Anyway, /wp-includes/version.php

 * thanks – and yeah – they could have just said something like “This is WordPress
   version 2.6.1, please upgrade to 2.6.2”
