Somehow recent changes to my web site have blocked activation of my theme. When I try to activate it, I get the following error message:

“Next functions are disabled by server configurations, but needed for correct theme working: iconv_substr. To enable these functions, remove them from disable_functions parameter of [php] section in php.ini.”

The problem is, I can’t find the php.ini file in order to make the change! There are several php.ini.bak files, but no php.ini. When logging in to cPanel, I tell it to show me hidden files, but I can’t find php.ini. I’ve looked in all of the directories.

    Suggestions?

  • Hi @ross-lampert,

Are your settings in another file called .user.ini?

Also it could be possible that your host has blocked iconv_substr so you may need to contact them to ask if that’s the case.

    Hi again!

We haven’t heard back from you in a while, so I’ve gone ahead and marked this thread as resolved. If you’re still having issues with Wordfence, please feel free to open another thread!

Hi, Dave. Sorry, I got wrapped up in other things. I did look for php.ini and never found it but forgot to look for .user.ini. In any case, I contacted my host’s tech support folks, and they were able to replicate the problem. It appears to be fixed but they did not tell me exactly what they did.

I say “appears to be fixed” because Wordfence then tried to limit my access to the site, even as a non-logged-in visitor. I’ve whitelisted a couple of IP addresses and that appears to have solved that problem, but I haven’t checked it again today to confirm it.

In any case, I do have access to my theme again, and the site looks more like what it should, so at least we’ve made that much progress.
