# Does Automatic Upgrading Overwrite The Theme Files?

 * I did an automatic upgrade to 3.0.2 and afterwards found that the links I had
   added to the theme header for scripts and css files were longer in the file.
 * This implies that during the upgrade process the theme files are overwritten/
   reinstalled, is that correct behavior?
 * This suggests that if you have “tinkered” with the theme files you always need
   to make a manual upgrade, is that correct?

 * Yes – the default Twenty Ten theme files are often overwritten during an upgrade.
   For this reason, it is recommended that you consider creating a [child theme](http://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes)
   for your customisations.
